ABOUT LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
Located in Arusha and Manyara region of Tanzania, Lake Manyara National Park spans over an area of 330 sq Km. The majority of the park comprises a narrow strip bounded by Gregory rift Wall to the west and an alkaline Lake Mayara to the east. The majority of the area of the park is occupied by an alkaline lake which bears salt deposits. It is surrounded by grassy floodplains.The park’s landscape also comprises mized acacia woodlands and patches of evergreen forests sustained by perennial groundwater springs arising from the base of escarpments.
Though small in size, the park harbours myriad flora and fauna. Especially famous are tree-climbing lions. Other mammals found here include elephant,buffalo,giraffe, Kirk’s dik-dik,klipspringer, zebra, waterbuck, warthog, blue monkey,hippopotamus,cheetahs,gazelles and impala.The park also has the largest concentration of baboons in the world. The shores of the lake attract an astonishingly wide variety of birds. Over 400 birds are found here which make bird-watching a pleasant experience. The park is well-known for flamingo which hcan be ssen gathering in large hoards near the shores of the lake. Other birds found here include pelicans,herons, egrets, stilts, stalks, spoonbills, silvery-cheeked hornbills, crowned eagles and crested guinea fowl.
WHEN TO GO ?
Though the peak season of the park is from July to October, it can be visited at any time of the year.
