ABOUT MISHMI HILLS
Mishmi Hills occur on north-eastern tip of Indian in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Occurring at a junction of Northeastern Himalayas and Indo Burma ridges, these hills represent the southward extension of Great Himalayan range. Much of the Mishmi hills lie in Dibang distict of Arunachal Pradesh. The hills are divided into three altitudes — the lower altitude (1,300m) stretches from Roing to Tiwarigaon; the Tiwarigaon to Coffee House section forms the middle (2,655m); the highest altitudes rise from Coffee House to the Myodia Pass, the most elevated point (2,666m) on the Roing-Hunli stretch of the Roing-Hunli-Anini road, and it’s distinguished by snow-covered mountains. The region receives high rainfall ranging from 4500 mm to 5000 mm. The varied topography and humid climatic conditions favour the growth of luxuriant vegetation, which is a home to myriad flora and fauna. It is the richest bio-geographical province of the Himalayan zone and one of the mega bio-diversity hotspots of the world.
The vegetation of Mishmi Hills ranges from tropical evergreen forest, sub-tropical broad leaved forest to alpine meadows. The altitude varies from just 150 metres at Dibang River to around 3000 metres at Myodia Pass thus offering a wide range of habitats. This is due to its unique location at the junction of the Paleoarctic, Indo-Chinese, and Indo-Malayan bio-geographic regions.
The region shelters rare and endangered fauna like mithun, Tiger, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Snow Leopard, Golden Cat, Jungle Cat, Marbled Cat , Leopard Cat ,Mishmi Takin,Red panda, Musk Deer, and the Himalayan Black Bear and hoolock gibbon. The refion is also a home to over 500 species of birds like Purple and Green Cochoa, Violet and Emerald Cuckoos not to mention Satyr Tragopan and Blood Pheasant. Also Gould’s Shortwing, White-hooded Babbler, Pale-headed Woodpecker and Pale-capped Pigeons, Several species of Laughingthrush, Babblers, Flycatchers, Yuhinas, Minla, Liochichla, Ward’s & Red-headed Trogon, Sunbirds, Sibia, Hornbills, Forktails, Rosefinches, Warblers, Scimmitar Babblers, Parrotbills, Woodpeckers, Tree-creepers, Nuthatch, Drongos, Accentors and Thrushes.
